A group of seven accused members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
