The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a court battle that challenged her legal standing to serve.
Attorney General's Statement
US Attorney General, the Attorney General, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the court's "flawed" ruling made it impossible for the official to perform her duties.
"Do not interpret adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "The effort will now stretch across the country."
Court Ruling
Her resignation was triggered by a judicial panel found that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is expected to impact numerous prosecutions in New Jersey.
The judicial panel said that a temporary posting that bypassed Senate approval ran afoul of the statute on vacant positions.
Ongoing Legal Battle
It was also stated that she will continue working within the DOJ as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to seek further review of the disqualification, aiming for a overturned decision.
Writing online, she argued that the judiciary "must not second-guess the President's choice of prosecutors entrusted with executing the executive branch's core responsibility of criminal prosecution."
Performance in Office
Bondi praised her tenure and said that during her run, the city of Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in crime. Additionally that the southern city of Camden experienced its first summer in half a century with no murders.
Connection to Donald Trump
The 41-year-old attorney, first joined the former president's legal defense in 2021. She went on to acted for her client in his hush-money trial in the previous year, when he was conviction on 34 counts of financial record manipulation.
Prior to Habba took on the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had stated he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor in a potential future term, describing Habba as a steadfast ally and a dedicated fighter for justice.
