No professional sports organization markets equal footing as effectively as the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after 10 weeks during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape with perfect equilibrium among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. It’s one where most of the league appear to be fine.
Clear Picture in NFC
Within the National Football Conference, to some degree, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) seem like the most balanced franchises in football, and secured decisive victories on Sunday. The Eagles with six wins notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess among the most gifted lineups in the league, comparable to the Packers franchise (5-2-1 record). The Lions also (six and three), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense while managing internal staff conflicts, have proven they're capable of dominating strong franchises. For all five, it's straightforward to construct a route to the final game.
Muddled AFC Picture
Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. The current division frontrunners after ten games: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all standing at eight wins) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The usual contenders, featuring elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or have been hit by injuries.
Parity Mechanics
To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching this season's top AFC teams within the conference remains somewhat odd. Areas of each team meet championship standards, though not comprehensively. If someone requested to lock in your AFC title game selections today, would you confidently select any one of the four division leaders?
Team Breakdowns
Colts Situation
Beginning with the Colts, the signal-caller hasn’t quite reached pumpkin status. Yet the past two games have raised concerns. He's reverting to giving away possessions and struggling against pressure. He was sacked seven times against the Falcons in the weekend game, and had a short sequence where he delivered an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This is a week after he gave away possessions five separate times versus Pittsburgh.
Indianapolis' offensive unit excelled during early games because Jones avoided game-changing errors. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, like their German performance. Yet Jones going back to his historically mistake-heavy play would end any playoff run.
Patriots Examination
The Patriots seem relatively comparable. Last season, they were league laughingstocks. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team across the league post seven wins in a row. Except for committing turnover errors a winnable game against Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting at 9–1 with the best record. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They've played against the easiest slate throughout football, yet vulnerabilities remain. Drake Maye has been brought down thirty-five times – among the highest totals – with several hits he endured during the game proved brutal. Over time, those hits add up.
Broncos Situation
The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and the perception remains as if they’re holding their breath. The Denver signal-caller has been erratic, with the attack struggling, while the defensive unit provides the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, Denver cannot intimidate playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West at 7-2, however, health issues affecting their protection unit will create difficulties to mount a deep postseason tilt.
Pittsburgh Steelers
And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning the AFC North despite being thumped 25-10 by the Chargers on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense regularly vanishes, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status regularly manifest. They’re 5–4 and holding on, but Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson with manageable games ahead, are on a three-game win streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record and still look like capable of division victory speaks volumes regarding the conference as a whole.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens represent a segment of the Big Three – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the most fear in opposing teams if they qualified. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.
Bills Struggles
Previously, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. During Sunday's action they experienced one of the most disappointing losses during the campaign. They didn't simply fail against Miami; they were embarrassed, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in over three years.
