A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
